Our Club Rides

Our friendly club openly welcomes riders of all abilities and levels of experience.

We all share the same passion for riding our bikes, whether that be on a social group ride at a leisurely pace, a much livelier training ride with like minded riders, across the flats of the Somerset Levels or the testing climbs of the Quantocks Hills or even our renowned Audax “The Dunkery Dash”.

Our varied schedule of club rides endeavours to offer something for everyone to enjoy group riding in safety.

Sunday Club Ride

Every Sunday departing The Cornhill, Bridgwater at 9:00am.

Each week a nominated ride leader will choose a route, this is normally 45-50 miles long with a level of elevation that is manageable for the vast majority of club riders. The group will aim to arrive at a pre-arranged coffee shop by 11:00am for refreshments before returning to Bridgwater around 1:00 pm.

Groups

A group

For experienced riders comfortable with group riding at an average pace of 17-19mph over varied terrain that may include some challenging climbs. The A group will normally ride an extended version of the main route, often adding an additional climb or two. The group will have a sub leader appointed on the morning with the aim of arriving at the nominated coffee shop to meet the other group(s).

B group

The main group led by the ride leader for the day.

The average pace is normally 15-16mph but this will vary according to the terrain and riding conditions. The aim will be to ride as a group for the duration of the ride with no-one being left behind. After a climb the ride will stop to regroup to ensure that everyone can stay together.

B+ group

If the number of riders in the main group becomes too large the formation of a second group may be decided on the day. The aim will be to split the group to allow the quicker riders to form a B+ group, with their own sub leader, riding at a pace somewhere between the A and B group. The B+ group will normally follow the pre-planned route of the day.

C group

Suitable for riders looking for a shorter ride of around 35-40 miles with an average pace of 12-14mph, the group may not head for the nominated coffee shop, instead choosing an option closer to home.

Details of the Sunday ride are posted on the group Facebook page during the preceding week.

Wednesday Club Social Ride

Every Wednesday departing 1610 Sports Centre Car Park, Bridgwater at 9:15am.

The Wednesday ride is a social group ride of 40-50 miles, usually on gentle or undulating terrain, although occasionally some climbing may be included. The emphasis of this ride is on maintaining a comfortable average pace of around 15mph with plenty of chatting opportunity en-route. Numbers will normally dictate that the Wednesday ride stay together as one group.

  • The group will be co-ordinated by a ride leader and will follow a pre-determined route with a midway coffee stop.
  • The group normally arrives back in Bridgwater around 1:00pm.
  • Sometimes riders may to choose to make their own way to or from the café to meet up.
  • The ride leader will post the intended ride details on the club Facebook page a day or so in advance

Saturday Club Ride

Every Saturday departing Bridgwater Hospital, Bower Lane @ 09:15.

  • The Saturday club ride follows a regular route of 30 miles out to Langport for coffee going via the short, but testing, Ham Hill and returning over the Somerset levels. As the ride follows a regular route a ride leader is nominated on the day, this will be an experienced club member.
  • Pace for this social ride can be variable depending on who is present, however 16mph average is a good guide.

TNRC (Tuesday Night Road Crew)

Every Tuesday (April – October) departing from various locations at 6:00pm

  • The average pace is 18-20mph over the full ride, however periodic speeds of up to 30mph on the flat are common whilst riding in a tight group formation. The ride is not a chain gang but rotation of riders is actively encouraged to share the workload and maintain group speed.
  • Whilst the ride is non stop, riders will regroup after climbs or if a rider has “lost the wheel”.
  • Riders should be capable of riding near to their limit over a two-hour period.
  • Return to Bridgwater around 8:30pm.

Double Gates – Beginners/new to groups ride

The first Sunday of every month depart Cornhill, Bridgwater at 9:00am

  • Destination is Double Gates Tea Rooms, Godney for coffee to meet up with the other groups. The route is predominantly flat with a total distance of 36 miles.
  • Suited to those riders who are less confident of group dynamics and would like to experience riding with the club.
  • Return to Bridgwater for 1:00pm.

Non-members are welcome to ride with us on up to three occasions to get a feel for the club and what we have to offer. Whilst we are all not afraid of a bit of wind or rain, the ride leader will always cancel a ride if weather conditions do not favour safe group riding.

Ad-hoc – non club rides

Members will often use the club Facebook page to organise informal rides throughout the week, offering more opportunities to ride with others on an informal basis.
